Why do I have to be poor?

I was born in a family of peasants.
In a rather dry and arid region.
In a country of huge contrasts.

I am 9 years old and my name is Alex.
My parents, though they are poor,
do all that they can.

They work in a farming company
that is rather large.
They work many hours every day.
Yet, there is often not enough money
to buy food or other material.

I am an only child and I am often
all alone at home or at my grandma’s house.

I like to go to school,
but sometimes there is no money
to buy books or other material.
I am a child that thinks a lot.
About why things are what they are.
About the poverty we live in
and about the riches of a few others.
Why do some have to be poor
and others rich?

I do not really want to become rich.
I just want to be able to go to school,
to learn a profession,
to find a job in a company
that respects me
and that pays me a fair salary.
That way, I can have a decent life,
and share it with a woman I love
and give to my child or children
what they need: love, peace,
respect, education…

May the politicians that now accept
the things as they are, change soon
and also want what we all need,
whether we are poor or rich:
love, peace, respect, education…
